Geneva - 2019

Leading With Purpose

Hotel President Wilson, 14-15 June 2019, Geneva, Switzerland

The challenge of leadership has never been greater. On the one hand, business leaders are experiencing unprecedented shifts as they face new demands to take responsibility for the social and environmental impact of their organizations. On the other hand, meeting the demands of investors for sustained financial performance has become increasingly challenging with the widespread digital transformation of business and society.

The Alumni Forum Europe will consider how leaders today can rise to meet these challenges and seize the opportunities of this unique moment: What does it take to forge companies that not only deliver economic performance but also contribute to social and environmental progress? How can digital transformation complement the move to more mission-driven organizations? How do you lead your people in a way that inspires them, fosters the right mindset and infuses values that balance the company’s economic mission and broader societal goals?

Torn between the dual challenge of contributing to social progress while delivering economic performance, senior executives navigating the dynamic global market need to answer the following question:

What does it take to lead today?

The Netherlands - 2018

Programme

Significant changes are going on in the world. The world population is expected to grow significantly in the next decades leading to more pressure on our planet. The consequences are visible everyday: more extreme weather and rising water levels. Together with increasing inequality in the world we see more pressure on society and politics due to immigration from all sorts of reasons. How can we stay safe? What will happen because of exponential growth of technology? Will we still have jobs now that AI is taking away lots of jobs. What will this mean for the future of work, employability, equality and, ultimately, us?

The forum touched upon all of these subjects and stressed the need for leadership and a clear role of business in society in order to tackle these issues. This forum raised awareness about these issues, inspired participants with great examples of new leadership and called to action through an interactive programme that offered clues on how to make a positive impact on our society and the world at large.

Friday 8 June

The Friday programme was mainly about raising awareness. The afternoon opened with a visionary speaker who painted a picture of global changes and challenges and what they might mean. Furthermore, there were several keynote speeches and interviews from people in politics (Frans Timmermans, Vice President of European Commission), business (Wiebe Draijer, CEO of Rabobank, and Jessica Uhl, CFO of Shell International) and academics (Louise Fresco, Chairwoman Wageningen University). Bernard Hammelburg from BNR News Radio facilitated the afternoon and took care of the right level of interaction.

Saturday 9 June

As the Saturday was about inspiration and activation, the programme started early at the beach with an energiser session consisting on either a bootcamp or yoga. During the morning programme there were several TedX-like speeches. Prominent speakers from international politics and business shared their thoughts and opinions about the developments in their respective domains, the dilemmas they face and the solutions they suggest.

San Francisco - 2018

Inventing the Future

Inspiration, Intelligence, and Inclusion

InterContinental San Francisco, 13-14 April 2018

As part of INSEAD’s transformational approach to the relationship between business and society, the Alumni Forum Americas was a lively conversation with C-level executives, global decision makers and INSEAD thought leaders about the trends currently shaping the future business landscape globally.

Hundreds of INSEAD alumni gathered in San Francisco to discuss topics including entrepreneurship, innovations in venture finance, and the impact of technology on public trust. Whether you wanted to know more about the future of cryptocurrencies or about how gender influences negotiation outcomes, the Alumni Forum was a unique opportunity to share your views with a select group of inspiring speakers and like-minded alumni.

The Forum culminated on Saturday with a Gala Party held at The Pearl, a modern and innovative space featuring the internationally-inspired artwork of Alexis Laurent. The venue allowed participants to enjoy some of the best rooftop views of the Bay while dancing late into the night.

We are now starting our third decade of digital disruption.  The first decade of disruption created new forms of digital companies such as Amazon, who disrupted book retail and extended its reach to encompass almost all sectors in retail.  The key value creator was in the ability to offer information.  The second decade of disruption created companies such as Facebook and AirBnB, where value creation was in the social connections.  What is our theory of the future for the third wave of innovations from digital enterprises?  We invite our panel of experienced digital entrepreneurs to share their theory of the future with a short 5 minute presentation of their models, followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Professor Cha.  Professor Cha will also offer her view of the third wave of digital innovation for value creation.

But is it all for the good or is ‘fintech’ just a fad? Should fintech companies have access to such large amounts of data? What is the role of traditional financial institutions in the future? Paris - 2017

Digital Transformation: a Force for a Better World?

16-17 June 2017 - Paris

Even as technological advances continue to amaze us with new possibilities, the old confidence that societal progress and well-being will follow is waning.  There is also considerable uncertainty arising from the depth and reach of the digital evolution that we are living through: more and more traditional industries are facing the prospect of disruption by digital technologies and business models. While change is far from linear and deterministic, the underlying forces driving digital transformation are strong, with almost free computing power and storage conveniently packaged in the cloud and easily accessed via ubiquitous smart phones and high speed networks.  The implications for business and society promise to be as profound as the industrial revolution that arose from the advent of mass production and large scale enterprises.

The INSEAD Alumni Forum Europe 2017 explored:

- current and emerging technological trends and resulting major digital, social and technical disruptions
- how these disruptions impact business models, leadership and management practices, employees and broader society, as well as social forces fueled by anxiety with economic dislocation, lost privacy and lack of security
- how businesses will have to translate current and emerging technological possibilities into strategies, commercial success in the global market in terms of new innovative business models, jobs, types of employment, education and life-long learning

Since its inception, INSEAD’s mission has been to develop value-driven global business leaders who we believe can help the world address these challenges and reaffirm that business can be a force for good.

Paradigm Lost:  The future of capitalism?

Subramanian Rangan, The Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Court Endowed Chair in Societal Progress

The prevailing aspiration of business is performance, while that of society is progress. Capitalism, both the paradigm and practice, sits at the intersection of these dual aspirations. While its fruits have been impressive, capitalism now evokes a range of familiar concerns. From fairness to financialization, extreme climate to contagious consumerism, divergence in incomes to a money-politics nexus, trust in business and business leaders is shaky. Is the problem with the practice and/or the paradigm? Should and can enterprises better integrate performance with progress? Is performance the sole and proper realm of business while progress the proper realm of government? In this session we will explore these questions both from theory and practice.

Blue oceans, creativity and future performance

Renee Mauborgne, Affiliate Professor of Strategy, INSEAD

Low growth has become a norm in developed economies. Organizations struggle to find new growth. Competition has become yet more intense.   As bad as the situation may seem today, the good news is it doesn’t have to be this way. There is another way. But taking that path to success and strong profitable growth requires a fundamental rethinking of what is the essence of strategy.

During this keynote Professor Mauborgne will explore a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant and outline principles and tools any company can use to create and capture blue oceans - and chart a bold new path to winning the future.  She will discuss what Blue Ocean Strategy can do for established companies, governments and startups, outline what it takes to move from red oceans to blue, and will highlight how blue ocean strategy is being applied to for-profits, non-profits and governments to achieve differentiation and low cost and with it the strong profitable growth that all organizations and our economies need.

Good for whom? Humanising leadership in the global commons

Gianpiero Petriglieri, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD

With the loosening of boundaries between countries, sectors, and organizations—and between personal and professional lives—mobility and authenticity have become hallmarks of virtue and success. We are no longer just meant to be competent. We are also meant to be passionate. We cannot simply be efficient managers. We must become global leaders. In the global economy, the story goes, you are either a leader or a loser.

For all the hints to the backdrop of economic and technological upheaval, however, accounts of global leadership are similar to centuries old views of leadership—tribal, demanding, superhuman. The world might be changing radically but our views of leadership have changed superficially, if at all. This discrepancy between the image of leadership and the reality of leading is evident in the mistrust in current leaders and in the discontent among aspiring leaders. Global leadership is the ultimate good and yet it does not seem to do much good. It might be time, then, to reconsider what good it is and who it is good for.

The Leadership Mystique

Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries, The Raoul de Vitry d'Avaucourt Chaired Professor of Leadership Development; Emeritus Distinguished Clinical Professor of Leadership Development and Organizational Change

Organizations are like automobiles. They don’t run themselves, except downhill. They need people to make them work. And not just any people, but the right people. The effectiveness of an organization’s employees—particularly individuals in leadership positions – determines how the organizational “machine” will perform. What distinguish great organizations from mediocre ones are the attitudes of its people!

The Fourth Industrial Revolution

Keynote address by Michael Drexler, Head of Investor Industries, World Economic Forum

Today’s world is witnessing the confluence of three major trends.  Firstly, increased computational power has led to breakthrough progress in artificial intelligence and related areas. Secondly, the ubiquity of increasingly small smart devices and sensors is creating network effects and ‘big data’. Thirdly, more people are connected with each other than ever before. None of these trends is slowing down, and together they accelerate progress in other areas, be they material science, medicine or biology. They also have the potential to profoundly change the way we work, live and organize societies. What will the future of jobs look like?  How will a country’s economic policy be affected? Who are the winners and losers in this new world? A brief presentation on the World Economic Forum’s work and thinking about the issues will preface an interactive discussion on an inflection point in human endeavour.

For many years now, we have heard that the world’s companies are coming to Asia and, Asian companies are going global. But the challenges of globalization are evolving – from global reputational impacts to standards to impacts of global markets on local tastes and buying choices. What advice do the panellists have for delegates who are facing their own challenges of globalisation?

Four panellists from Asia and beyond, will share their experience and view on how to navigating this change and challenge.

SESSION 2
Navigating the waves of change: Diversity

One of the principal impacts of globalisation is on the ability of organisations to incorporate and manage diversity – in customers, stakeholders and employees. Traditionally Asian countries and companies have not been concerned about diversity because they worked in broadly homogenous markets.

What can we learn from companies in Asia that have been managing diversity for some time? What does best practice in the management of diversity look like? How does growing diversity impact corporate governance and how does leadership ensure that companies leverage the benefits of diversity?

Speakers:
Masako Egawa, Professor, Graduate School of Commerce and Management, Hitotsubashi University
Board Member, Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.,  Board Member, Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., Board Member, Tokio Marine Holdings, Inc.

FACULTY LECTURE
Lifelong learning at the top: Hurdles and Hacks

It is often said that we live in a VUCA world, i.e., a world characterised by significant volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. This is particularly true in Asia. In that kind of world, yesterday's answers are unlikely to keep working very long and what got you here is less and less likely to get you there. It may not even allow you to stay here for very long!  As a result, a growing number of organisations are realising that the best predictor of executives' future success may well be their ability to keep learning over time, as opposed to simply their past success.

There's good news: Research shows that it is possible for leaders to develop new leadership behaviours. The bad news:  As we have all noticed over the years, it is hard – and arguably increasingly hard as we get older – to develop and sustain new responses and behavioural patterns that don’t come naturally to us.  And while many executives leave executive development programmes fully determined to change one of their ways, they often find it very difficult to do so back at work.  As the saying goes, it’s not easy for leopards to change their spots!

Professor Manzoni has been focusing much of his recent efforts on understanding better why lifelong learning at the top is so challenging and what senior leaders can do to improve their odds. This session will give us an opportunity to hear from his on-going research and discuss his current insights.

Jean-François Manzoni COL'12Dec, Professor of Management Practice, The Shell Chaired Professor of Human Resources and Organisational Development, INSEAD

SESSION 3
Navigating the waves of change: Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Globalisation and diversity constitute key forces that will grow dramatically in Asia and indeed in the rest of the world. To deal with them, established companies will need to reach greater levels of innovation than ever before. On the other hand, new, entrepreneurial organisations, will blaze trails that will leave more established companies behind.

FACULTY LECTURE
Exercising Leadership Judgment: The real role of leadership

Having spoken of the challenges of globalisation and its impacts on leading organisations today, Professor Narayan Pant speaks of the increasing need for leaders to exercise judgment. Paradoxically, as the amount of data available to us increases, the need to exercise judgment increases too.

Yet other evidence suggests that our judgment is often systematically flawed. What are leaders to do at a time like this?

Professor Pant will present results from emerging approaches to leadership development that suggest building awareness, and mindful practice, can be powerful supports for leaders in volatile times.

He will then draw overarching lessons from the day as a conclusion.

Strategic Agility in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Chaotic and Ambiguous) World

Yves L. Doz, Emeritus Professor of Strategic Management; The Solvay Chaired Professor of Technological Innovation

The concept of Strategy, and the tools of Strategic Management were developed for a simpler and slower changing world that the fast changing and complex environment most of us now face. This session will focus on Strategy under growing complexity (sometimes referred to under the VUCA acronym – Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous). This builds on research on Strategic Agility –creating a common direction and ambition, through foresight, dialogue, and inclusiveness in the Strategy process, building flexibility in resource allocation, and fostering a common set of action priorities making real Strategic decisions possible without singling-out winners and losers among executives.

We are arguably in the midst of one of the most profound economic transformations in history. The current “great decouplingʺ of labor and productivity is bringing about profound social and economic changes at an unprecedented scope and scale. During prior periods of economic transition entrepreneurs have led the way through the economic realignment that has resulted in the creation of new markets, new products and new services. What are the challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurs, especially social entrepreneurs, during this period of “decoupling” that challenges us to bring our communities, societies and economies into alignment?

Keynote Adress: Finance as a Tool for Inclusive Growth

Bertrand Badré, Managing Director and World Bank Group Chief Financial Officer

Finance can be highly disruptive and destructive, yet we must also concede the reverse – finance can be an immeasurably powerful tool for good. Flow of capital into emerging markets and developing economies for infrastructure increases the availability of basic services of a community, resulting in increased access to water, electricity, and sanitation, more hospitals, schools and roads and stimulation of entrepreneurship, trade and prosperity. While extreme poverty in the 21st century is diminishing, there is more we can and should do.

Asia: The Next Act

17-19 October 2014 - Sydney

With China faltering, other economies on the ascendant and the resources boom on the wane, the old rules of engagement certainly no longer hold true.  So how do we engage with Asia?  How does Asia engage with the rest of the world? The INSEAD Alumni Forum Asia intented to explore this uncertain future.  It drew on the expert knowledge of INSEAD, the Business School for the World, alumni from across the globe and an impressive line-up of expert speakers, providing an unprecedented opportunity for discussion and interaction to help you and your organisation better prepare for, in short, Asia: The Next Act.

Panel Session: CEO Roundtable 1

The Future of Business in Asia
The paradigms that usually apply have been upended. Shifting regulatory conditions, slowing growth and heightened local competition have contributed to a bearish outlook for many economies. Those once seen as minnows are now on the rise.
The Philippines and Sri Lanka now lead the way with low debt, low inflation and escalating annual growth, while China and India's status as the star performers is undeniably under threat.

The panel will discuss the opportunities and challenges which lie ahead for governments and businesses in Asia.

Financing Asia’s Continuous Transformation – Who will be the Winners?

From mobile banking to regulatory pressures to an increasingly demanding and sophisticated client base, the challenges for banking institutions in Asia are aplenty. Add to that an environment where criticism of the banking world is the order of the day and you have a clear idea of the challenges faced by senior baking executives.

Keeping in mind that the challenges in various countries in Asia differ, we will ask what it will take for the financial markets in the region to support Asian growth the coming 10 years? Which institutional structures will win out? The well regulated international banks or their regional counterparts with the finger on the pulse of the local economies? Or will well-funded private equity houses carve out a niche for themselves and take over the role played in the past by traditional financial institutions?

The Missing Piece: Succeeding in Asian Business

Asia has been a difficult environment for multinational firms and their managers.  For instance, a BCG study of large Western firms concluded that while 34% of the potential market for their products was in Asia, the region only accounted for 14% of sales.  In a follow-up study, not a single company reported having sufficient capabilities in emerging markets.

This session identifies the key culprit and how to deal with it.

Innovation in Asia: The Alternative Approach

When most companies think of innovation, they focus on developing new technology or products - a process that is typically relegated to separate research and development departments where dozens of very expensive, highly qualified engineers rule.

Many Asian governments rushed to support this style of innovation and Asian companies embarked on investing in R&D. However this is an expensive and risky way to innovate: R&D budgets in some industries go as high as 30 per cent of sales, despite elusive returns. Every company wants to be the next Apple but this Jobsian style of innovation is hard to pull off.

Asian giants have attempted to replicate this model of innovation with limited success, often due to limited knowledge of markets, and the inability to find talented designers and engineers - who are concentrated in Silicon Valley.

Is this the best way for Asian companies to compete globally?
Professor Netessine discusses an alternative approach to innovation which some emerging Asian companies have proven successful.

Speaker:
Serguei Netessine, Professor of Technology and Operations Management, The Timken Chaired Professor of Global Technology and Innovation, Research Director of the INSEAD-Wharton Alliance

Global opportunities for European companies
Panel discussion

This panel assessed the recent trends of globalization among European firms. Competition through collaboration
Panel discussion

This panel explored how companies in Europe compete in a context where relevant resources and knowledge are increasingly distributed among suppliers, partners, stakeholders, and customers. While alliances and partnerships are not new practices, companies increasingly require the ability to manage complex webs of relationships in order achieve competitive advantage. Professor Andrew Shipilov, author of The Network Advantage led a discussion with a panel of alumni on how to improve competitiveness in Europe by leveraging collaboration networks.

Academic lead:

Andrew Shipilov, Associate Professor of Strategy, INSEAD; Akzo Nobel Fellow of Strategic Management

High-growth entrepreneurship in Europe
Panel discussion

Professor Filipe Santos led a panel of alumni discussing their experiences in creating European gazelles.

Academic lead:

Filipe Santos, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship, INSEAD; Academic Director, INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Initiative

Can Asia innovate?
Asia’s success has long been tied to its unique combination of ability to copy coupled with agility and adaptability. There have been inherent limitations to Asia’s ability for technological innovation, yet intense local competition, entrepreneurship and a growing talent pool are changing the innovation landscape.  New business models are fast emerging that are challenging the global industry paradigm.

What factors are driving changes or indeed, limiting the innovation landscape in Asia – market access, competition, private equity, talent pools, inherent culture?

What emerging models of disruptive innovation are seen now in the market? What are the implications for local investors and MNCs going forward? What impact is there for the global market?

Global Competitiveness: From Strategy to Action

May 2011 - Chicago

The inaugural Americas Alumni Forum in Chicago in May 2011 was a great success. It brought everyone who attended back to his or her days at INSEAD. With participants from the USA, Mexico and Canada, there was a little bit of learning, a celebration and some exploring, too. One hundred percent of the 2011 attendees rated their overall experience either very good or excellent.

The Saturday program–Global Competitiveness: From Strategy to Action–sparked creativity with both strategy and leadership discussions. We welcomed INSEAD Professor Dr. Susan Lynch, an expert in Blue Ocean Strategy. She discussed the paths to creating uncontested market space.

Saturday night was a true celebration, INSEAD-style. Drinks in Logan Square preceded dancing and more. Sunday’s cultural event, a boat tour of Chicago’s famous architecture, gave everyone a taste of the great Windy City.
